Short Story: Hope
The cars drove by, the people walked by, no one noticed.
They both stand-off and stare each other down, no one is willing to give in, they had both come too far to give in.
“You can’t do this!” Spero tried once again, even though they knew talking was pointless.
They took a step closer, hand over heart as they said “Can’t you feel it, their heart beating like crazy, fear coursing through their veins, their heart is beating for life!”
Tenebris’s eyes were dead and cold as they said, their hands clenching into fists, “It’s a natural behaviour, the body doesn’t want to die but since when did their body tell them what to do? There is nothing for us here”
Their feet are on the solid bricks, but their tiptoes now meet thin air, they can’t really hear the noise of the street but only their ragged breathing.
Spero pleaded, with everything they had, “Please don’t do this!”
Tenebris snapped, “You think I want to do this? I have no choice! And now you’re standing in the way! I don’t want to fight you”
“Then don’t!” Spero cried out, but they knew that Tenebris had already made up their mind.
They lunged for Hope, their hands aiming for their neck, ready to strangle into submission.
Their feet edged a little closer, and they were now heaving, the panic now felt like they were being paralysed.
Spero couldn’t move out the way in time, and they gasped out, as they felt hands squeezing around their neck, tightening.
They tried to kick them off, but Tenebris ignored their struggles.
“They don’t want this! I-I know they don’t!” Spero choked out.
“Ha! Of course, they do! I’m here!” Tenebris growled out.
“B-because if they truly do want this th-then why am I still here!” Spero yelled.
Tenebris jolted slightly in surprise Spero’s words and not expecting her volume.
Spero managed to dislodge their arms from underneath Tenebris’s body, because of their surprise and then, in an act of desperation, shoved their hands into Tenebris’s eyes.
Tenebris screamed in agony.
Their feet stepped back slightly, they felt like they couldn’t breathe properly. There were tears falling from their eyes, but why were they crying, they had wanted this? Didn’t they? They deserved this and the pain would finally stop!
Tenebris couldn’t stop themselves from scrambling away in pain, cringing. Spero struggled to their feet, their hands bloody, looking grim.
But their feet wouldn’t move.
They wanted this, didn’t they?
Yet their feet still wouldn’t move, like…something inside them was rebelling.
Spero felt their strength start to return, they had been so weak before, and they watched Tenebris look paler and weaker.
They kneeled down next to Tenebris as they repeated softly, “If they truly wanted this, then…why am I still here? The other personified emotions either died or were too weak to fight you, so…why can I still fight?”
Tenebris didn’t respond, they didn’t need too, they both knew the answer to that.
They stumbled away from the edge, then with trembling hands they took out their phone.
They just wanted someone, anyone.
“This is the Samaritans, the UK’s mental helpline”
They started to cry, they couldn’t stop the river from pouring down their face.
And they said the words that they knew they had always wanted to say.
”Help me, h-help me, p-please”
Spero smiled.
The End (Latin Names, Spero means I hope and Tenebris means Darkness)
