I volunteer at a charity shop (We have loads of charity shops in the UK) and I also volunteer at my local museum. It’s nice to feel like you’re helping out your community!
With the charity shop I started in 2018 and I planned to eventually leave once I had a job, but the people were so lovely and I enjoyed the feeling of actually making a difference even by a small amount I stayed on and we’ve had difficult times but also some fun times!
While I volunteer at my local museum because its my hope that I’ll eventually be able to have job in a museum but once again, it also feels good to help out and I recently have been aloud to help set up display cases and I also made them aware of a huge old dusty book that was being sold in the charity shop I volunteer at and I was able to bring the book to the museum. It was such a great feeling to add to their local collection!
I also have been told that the museum is hoping to create workshops to help more of us volunteers out and for someone who is interested in working in a museum, I can only look forward to the future!
I’m aware some museums have a bad reputation but I do honestly believe museums help us to learn about our histories and its important to know our history since it can lead to better understanding others.
Everything I find just makes me wonder about our history and even more grateful for what I have, in December I was looking through Christmas cards from British soldiers in WW2 and it really helps me put my life in perspective, wonder about theirs and hope that the people that held the pen to these cards made it through the war and if they didn’t, at the very least their fight will be remembered and they didn’t die for nothing.
Because in my opinion museums also hold important memories, that should be learnt about and never forgotten less history repeats and we make the same mistakes.
