Daily Prompt,Books

Daily writing prompt
List three books that have had an impact on you. Why?

I read as much as I used too but I suppose the three books that have had a big impact on me are a book called A Little History of The World by E.H Gombrich, The Story of Art by E.H Gombrich and its not really a book per say but a series of books, Harry Potter, I’m sure the majority will know that series XD

I dislike JK Rowling a lot due to her views but I can’t stop loving her books, I have so many fond memories of my parents reading me the books after they came out when I was little and standing outside for hours in such a huge queue to wait for the next book to be released in our town.

While the other books represent the same thing for me, they actually made me realise I can enjoy history books and as someone who is fascinated by our human history in general, I felt like I had to force myself to read these dull pages about certain factors of human history to find out what I wanted to know and it was so long. I leaned more towards watching documentaries and informational videos on YouTube but both these books, made me realise that if I find the right history book, I can really enjoy them.

The way the author writes is just fun and exciting, it made me want to read more of his books. One thing I found interesting as well was that I didn’t realise the author was no longer with us or that he had experienced both world wars, he is originally from Vienna, Austria-Hungary, born in 1909 but in his working life he settled in England. Both world wars as far as I can remember are not mentioned in the book and I even remember getting near the end of the book and wondering how he was going to fit the world wars in. At the end it was only then realising the actual time of this book and to him, the world wars are not even considered history yet but they are now.

It made me think long and hard about how different history books will be depending on the time that it was written and the perspective of the historian. I think many depending on the country and time it was written may even not really be reliable history books but a fascinating take into their perspective.

The little history of the world is also the only book where I’ve actually wanted to know more about the author and went out of my way to read another of his books, instead of just focusing on the book itself and if it has another set in the series.

I hope anyone who reads this is well and has had or is having a good day! ❤

  1. Funny they don’t seem to be offering me the same daily prompts as you. I know we’re different regions but we basically speak and write the same language. Strange. Well, my books would be John Grisham’s A Painted House, Winnie the Pooh series and Dr Seuss’s McGelligot’s Pond.

    1. Do they not? That’s odd, I just go to my home page then click on the latest one? Oh I used to read Winnie the Pooh when I was little, brings back fond memories 😊 I don’t think I have heard about the other books though what genre are they?

      1. You’ve got to look into Dr Seuss. He was a very popular children’s book author over here.

  2. I feel the same way about a lot of authors as you do about J.K. Rowling — love the art but not the artist. It’s difficult to separate the art from the artist sometimes, but I try. As the other commentor said, we do have different prompts, but I’ve been aware that not everyone gets the same prompt for awhile now. It makes things interesting. 🙂
