Daily Prompt, Respecting Athletes

Daily writing prompt
Name the professional athletes you respect the most and why.

To be very honest? I don’t have a particular athlete I respect, I’d essentially respect all of them. Doing a job like that, where you’d keep to a strict diet and strict regime must be tough. I don’t respect them as much as I respect nurses or fire fighters, etc, since they literally save peoples lives but I do have a level of respect for the work they put into their profession.

However I don’t have someone I specifically respect. I don’t really watch sports that much or pay attention to news about them.

I used to love playing football but I never enjoyed watching it. I joined a youth girls football team when I was young but for some reason it didn’t last that long, I’m not sure why.

When I was 5-11 years old I used to play football in the playground, mainly with the boys, me and one other girl, who was a tomboy like me, used to play as well. However when I went to secondary school and I was 11 or 12 years old, when physical strength wasn’t that different yet, I was too shy to ask guys I didn’t know if I could join them, sometimes I’d watch them a bit wistfully from afar, trying to find the courage to ask but being worried about speaking to people I didn’t know and being laughed at because I was a girl, since as far as I could see, there were only boys playing.

But yeah, apart from enjoying playing football when I was younger and I also enjoyed playing badminton sometimes, I never enjoyed watching it or paying a lot of attention to specific athletes.

I hear a lot about Andy Murray and when I was younger, David Beckham but I was never that interested in them, so it feels wrong to say I respect them more than others.

I did however by paying attention to my surroundings, find a funny trend with Andy Murray in regards to people who supported him in England specifically, when he lost, they dropped their support and he was “Scottish only” and there was this attitude, “He is from Scotland, not England, he has nothing to do with us” But when he won, English peole who supported him were suddenly were like “His British! His one of us! Yay! United Kingdom, Yay!” And suddenly weren’t trying to pretend the UK didn’t exist, which I found a bit funny, but I’m sure Scottish people who were interested in Andy Murray weren’t a fan English people doing.

I’m sorry to our neighbours 🙂

I don’t know, I find peoples attitude to their own nationalities and identities fascinating sometimes, but thats probably off track.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed and I wrote this a bit earlier so I’m not that tired, yay. Hope everyone is having a good day or night!

  2. It’s perfectly fine to respect the hard work and dedication of athletes in general without singling out specific individuals. Everyone has their own interests and passions, and it’s important to acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of people in various fields, including sports. Your observations about national identity and support for athletes are interesting, and it’s always good to find humor in such situations. I hope you’re having a great day or night too! 😊
