Daily Prompt, Celebrating Holidays

Daily writing prompt
How do you celebrate holidays?

This will be very short because I’m tired and got a lot of things to do tomorrow, sorry about that!

Anyway I have to say I did read this wrong and for a split second ha! I wondered why they were asking, how I’d celebrate me going abroad, or going on vacation, vacation mean’s holiday to us. I’m a brit and we never use the word holiday to describe Christmas or Halloween or anything like that as far as I’m aware.

We don’t really celebrate Halloween that much, I have to say. I think it is slowly becoming more popular but it’s not huge celebration, I think it’s largly seen as something you celebrate if you have children and you go out trick or treating with your children and it’s seen as more of a children’s activity. If you live on a busy street, you will make sure you have loads of sweets before the evening for the children you expect to knock at your door, all dressed up in “scary” costumes.

Everyone’s Christmas is different but it’s usually celebrated with your family, some go to friends or families, some stay at home. I and my sister still get presents from Father Christmas because “someone” wanted to keep the tradition going and pretend I didn’t see them at eleven years old, sneaking the presents in. So we have fun and pretend we get presents from Father Christmas, even though we’re adults now.

We also celebrate a day called Fire Works Day or Guy Fawkes day, basically celebrating the fact our goverment didn’t get blown up in the 1600s but I’m too tired to get into it. Here is a video about it, on youtube if you want to check it out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWZIbnkkI9U or this fun children’s documentary I remember watching as a child, to learn about it in my history class, I’m excited I found it on youtube! Though it is very fussy since it’s pretty old https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMLHau_rBJ8

Anyway, this was a lot longer than I orginilly planned, hope you enjoyed it!

  2. You are quite right about celebrating Christmas with friends or family .. The last time I celebrated festivals with my family was 2 years ago .. Because of my studies and exams back to back I didn’t have time to travel back to my country as I live in another country due to studies .. But I have some friends with whom I celebrate …. I hope I can go home soon and spend my time with my family.

    1. Hopefully you do! I understand being on the opposite end of that, my sister went away abroad one year for many months and that included Christmas, I missed her a lot and it we are twins and Christmas is our birthday so it felt even more lonely without her despite having other family around so hope you can do that 😊

I haven’t spent Christmas with friends before but my Uncle has, I think he enjoys it more with his friends because he doesn’t have to make the trip to our house which is a long way πŸ˜‚

  4. Halloween didn’t *used* to be a huge thing here either. It was a children’s holiday (or whatever you call them) for a long time. Then those kids grew up, now it’s an everyone’s holiday. And it’s getting as bad as Xmas. Like it’s flipping September, and there’s Halloween stuff on the shelves in the stores. Has been for awhile. I’m all for celebrating stuff, but I wish holidays would stay in their own month.

I’m getting grumpy in my old age. ^_^ Then again, I’ve always felt that way. Ha!

    1. Yeah! I was surprised when my friend who used to live in the US, she is half American, told me how big of a deal it was over there and surprised as well when she told me that adults also get dressed up and do trick and treating! I do agree that they seem to be celebrated far too early. It’s like that with Christmas here, like as soon as Halloween is done or even around the same time as Halloween and I’ll see Christmas decorations and I’m like 😱 it’s too early! 🀣

      1. Oh, there’s Christmas (and Thanksgiving) stuff on the shelves now too. But as soon as November hits, there will be more Xmas stuff everywhere.
