Daily Prompt, Change Mind, Politics

Daily writing prompt
What’s a topic or issue about which you’ve changed your mind?

Mmmm this is a interesting prompt? I think what I am going to talk about may be controversial! Something else in depth!

(Long prompt coming up!)

I suppose my opinion on politics has changed.  I’m very interested in politics now but as a kid I didn’t care about it one bit, to me anything to do with the news was “adult stuff that I didn’t need to care about” and “adult stuff” was boring.

I only started to change my view and actually start to look into politics more when I was eighteen or nineteen but there was something huge on the news that I couldn’t avoid and was basically force fed to me in my every day life.

But I realised that despite it being forced upon me, since every Brit was talking about it, I was interested in what was going on behind the scenes.

Brexit.

(That said I was interested in the Scottish referendum but once that was over, I stopped looking into politics again but Brexit is what made me stay interested in our politics)

Now if you don’t know what Brexit is, the UK government decided to nose dive itself of a cliff (Yeah you can tell how I feel about it) and bring up the subject of the UK leaving a trade union called the EU.

But it doesn’t just cover trade but essentially a lot of collaboration between most European countries.

I know I probably shouldn’t be selfish but after the vote but from my own selfish view, I found so many of these job great opportunities as well as this exchange program that looked honestly fantastic, only to find that they only accept people from the EU.

Thank you Brexit…

I also playing with the idea of eventually moving to Spain (though it’s just an idea right now and probably will take years and years if I ever do decide I definitely want to leave) But that will be a lot harder as well.

Thank you Brexit again!

Anyway rant over, I became interested in politics because of this. Because I had avoided politics up at until now, I found myself completely clueless and since EVERYONE was talking about it, our media, tv shows, you’d hear strangers in the street arguing about it, my curiosity made me want to know about what everyone was talking about.

So I forced myself to research into it, because I was old enough to vote and I thought I would find it incredibly boring but I actually realised that I found politics really interesting!

It made me feel like I wanted shake certain politicians sometimes and yell at the top of my lungs what are you doing! You’re making everything worse! But I still found it all very fascinating.

I also found geopolitics very interesting as well and that also tied in with my interest in history.

For some reason when I was younger I didn’t really connect my interest in history to today’s politics, they were separate things in my mind but now I see the connection.

That history often dictates what’s happening now and we all will eventually become history after all.

Looking into the past and looking at it in a more geopolitical ways wars sometimes are started because of something that happened in the past and sometimes it even feels like petty rivalry.

(Looking into my own countries history I feel like that petty rivalry feeling props up with France and England later Britain/UK a lot 😅)

But anyway, so I changed my view of being bored of politics and becoming interested in it due to Brexit.

I think that that was the first time I payed proper attention to a vote. But unfortunately, I caught up with what this was all about, too late. 😭

By the time I had done proper research and decided that I didn’t want brexit, the vote had already happened. I didn’t vote, I don’t regret not voting because I feel like I was too uniformed on the subject at the time of the vote.

I’d rather not vote than make a uniformed vote.

By the time I felt I was well informed, the vote was already over.

There was so much misinformation out there and I think some of it was viewed by the fact that our current government didn’t expect Brexit to win and in fact our prime minister at the time eventually admitted that he had announced the referendum because he thought the UK would vote to stay in the EU and that would strengthen his position.

So a huge change for the UK, just because our prime minister wanted more support. He resigned after the results came out.

Great…

And it seems we’ve had a hard time keeping prime ministers since then! And scandal and scandal seemed to come about, which definitely was not normal but feels like the new normal now.

I remember learning about when the biggest scandal was our prime ministers activity in his university years to do with a pig and no I’m not going to elaborate 🤦‍♀️😅

But its really so minor compared with what’s gone on with our future prime ministers after him! I know it could be a lot worse but we’re not used to going through our prime ministers so quickly!

I used to want to do whatever it takes to rejoin the EU but eventually I changed my opinion again about Brexit, where I basically have become pretty tired over the struggle, I also just want the government to actually govern and stop picking arguments with the EU (which seemed to have calmed down since our new prime minister Rishi Sunak thankfully)

Not that I want him to stay in charge. I  disagree with him and his party on a lot of things since I’m a lefty, so I want the conservatives, the right leaning party, out of office.

They been in charge for about 12 years now, give the left a go please!  I do know the left did a bad job when they were in charge, thinking of a certain war but it’s been many years since then!

If you are more right leaning, I’m in no way saying you shouldn’t be, my parents are both right leaning and I still love and care about them. We all have our own opinions and we are welcome to them after all!

That’s said I do think there are certain opinions that I see on the right side that tend to crop up more that I definitely disagree with, but just because someone is more right leaning, doesn’t mean they agree with those opinions.

So I don’t usually automatically assume they think “this” when I hear someone’s political leanings.

Just because you agree with a certain party doesn’t mean you agree with everything about them.

That said, not just to do with politics but if someone is supporting someone who is honestly a nasty person, (Andrew Tate for example) then I will judge you.

Sorry!

No, I’m not actually sorry!

In summary to whoever got this far and wow if you did! Because I am aware I talked so much! I changed my mind on thinking politics was boring, then changed my mind on wanting to rejoin the EU, just because it be this big struggle and chaotic time that I don’t think we are ready for.

The end! Hope you all had a good day!

  2. It’s pretty smart to not judge someone by their political leanings. I wish more people would do that. I agree with you about judging someone if they support terrible people though.

    1. Thank you! Yes! People can be so quick to judge and it’s like hold on, just because I am more aligned to this party doesn’t mean I agree with everything they say or want to do and I think that can be said for most people
